The Function and Organization of the Fly Flight Motor/ Curr. Biol., Jan. 26, 2017 (Vol. 27, Issue 3). Fruit flies execute agile aerial maneuvers using only twelve control muscles per wing. In this study, Lindsay et al. used calcium imaging to record the activity of these muscles during flight, and they find that flies achieve precise control by using steadily active and transiently active classes of muscles.
