A nitrate sensor for plants - Sensing changes in soil ion concentration is essential for plants to survive and to sustain maximal growth. Ion sensors had not been identified in higher plants, but now Ho et al. demonstrate that CHL1, known to function as a nitrate transporter, can also sense a wide range of soil nitrate concentrations.
