Axon-Carrying Dendrites Convey Privileged Input

Axons of hippocampal pyramidal cells frequently derive from a basal dendrite rather than from the soma. These dendrites constitute a privileged channel for excitatory synaptic input, generating a major functional asymmetry in a subset of cortical neurons.
