For Instructors


We Share Science is an innovative way for students to share the research they are reading or conducting.  Consider using one or more of the assignments below in your next course. You can, of course, edit any of these assignments to better fit your context.


Assignment: Analysis of Research Articles

Create three (3) short video abstracts for three (3) research articles.  The abstracts should summarize the basic elements of the research and how the results relate to practice. You can create the video abstracts using the online presentation tool at www.WeShareScience.com, using PowerPoint on your computer, or using the webcam on your computer or cell phone. Each video abstract should be no more than 5 minutes long, focusing more on the content of the research article than on the production of the video. 

When done recording the videos, upload each video to either YouTube.com or Vimeo.com and then pin it to www.WeShareScience.com.   You will have to create an account with WeShareScience in order to create and post the abstracts. You can securely create your account using your current Facebook or Twitter account, or you can create one by email WeShareScience. With each video abstract be sure to write a description that includes, at minimum, the name of the lead researcher and the title of the article, though additional information in the description is useful.

When you have posted your three videos, copy-n-paste the URLs for each video (e.g., http://wesharescience.com/pin/286) into a Word document and submit to the Drop Box. Also include in the Drop Box the original PDF research articles for all three abstracts.


Each video abstract will be graded on...

  • Background on research (theory, hypotheses, researchers, etc.) -- (20%)
  • What they did (description of what the researchers actually did in the study) -- (30%)
  • What they learned (what results came from the research) -- (20%)
  • How we can apply (what applications does the research offer for practitioners) -- (20%)
  • Creativity in presentation -- (10%)


Assignment: Synthesis of Research Articles


Create one video abstract synthesizing three (3) empirical research articles.  The abstract should summarize the basic elements of each research study, explain how the studies are related, identify key themes distilled from the articles, and illustrate the collective value of the three articles. You can create the video abstract using the online presentation tool at www.WeShareScience.com, using PowerPoint on your computer, or using the webcam on your computer or cell phone. The video abstract should be no more than 8 minutes long, focusing more on the content of the research articles than on the production of the video. 

When done recording the videos, upload the video to either YouTube.com or Vimeo.com and then pin it to www.WeShareScience.com.   You will have to create an account with WeShareScience in order to create and post the abstracts. You can securely create your account using your current Facebook or Twitter account, or you can create one by email WeShareScience. With the video abstract be sure to write a description that includes, at minimum, the names of the lead researchers and the titles of the articles, though additional information in the description is useful.

  • Selection of quality research (appropriate, timely, aligned, etc.) -- (15%)
  • Synopsis of each research (hypotheses, participants, methods, etc.) -- (15%)
  • What they learned (what results came from the research) -- (20%)
  • Synthesis (linkages, themes, trends, collective value, etc.) -- (30%)
  • How we can apply (what applications does the research offer for practitioners) -- (10%)
  • Creativity in presentation -- (10%)


Assignment: Describe Your In-Progress Research


Create a video abstract describing the research you are conducting.  The abstract should summarize the basic elements of your research study and how the results will be of value.  You can create the video abstract using the online presentation tool at www.WeShareScience.com, using PowerPoint on your computer, or using the webcam on your computer or cell phone. The video abstract should be no more than 5 minutes long, focusing more on the content of the research articles than on the production of the video. 

When done recording the videos, upload each video to either YouTube.com or Vimeo.com and then pin it to www.WeShareScience.com.   You will have to create an account with WeShareScience in order to create and post the abstracts. You can securely create your account using your current Facebook or Twitter account, or you can create one by email WeShareScience.   • What you learned or hope to learn (what results will come from the research) -- (20%)
  • Value (what applications does the research offer for other researchers or practitioners) -- (20%)
  • Creativity in presentation -- (10%)

Create a TED-Ed Lesson

In addition to using research abstracts in the WeShareScience platform, you can create lessons around any video abstract using the TED-Ed tools available at: http://ed.ted.com/videos.  After selecting a research abstract, the TED-Ed tools will help you in creating thought provoking questions, finding additional teaching resources, and hosting online conversations about the topic.
